“Thank you so much, Redhead. You made this trip a lot of fun for me. See you at the courthouse wedding,” I say, emphasizing the word ‘courthouse’ to Grace standing on my terminal at LAX.

“Why do I feel like the apartment will feel empty without you? Safe flight. Hug your dad for me,” Grace mumbles, her eyes genuinely sad that I’m leaving.

A part of me feels comforted because it eases the guilt of disrupting her entire life this weekend. She went above and beyond to make sure I had a good time, and now she’s giving me those irresistible puppy-eyes as I leave. What a gem of a friend Allie has. I wish I had someone like her on my side of the world.

“Come here,” I pull her into a tight hug.

It feels more than just a friendly hug at this point, but I try my best not to let it show on my face. Similar to the way I masked my emotions when I revealed that I had carried her to bed. The sensation of having her in my arms, sleeping peacefully like an angel, altered my whole brain chemistry.

“In all honesty, I admire Cameron for being so responsible. We have great kids, Daniel,” Westin’s mom praises, her voice comforting.

She’s not just a family friend; she’s a mother figure. She and my mom were longtime friends, and her compassionate and loving nature only adds to her charm.

“Hear that, Dad? You have an amazing son,” I respond with a smirk.

“I know, I know. I just wonder how no woman in the whole town sees what we both see in you two. It makes no sense that you’re both still single.”

“Okay, we’ve heard that lecture before. Mom, tell us about work today,” Westin interjects, steering the conversation away from our relationship status.

I shoot a wink at him, appreciating his attempt to liberate us from their perpetual scrutiny of our single life. His mom, a nurse, revels in recounting her hospital escapades, often providing more information than she probably should.

After Westin and his mom bid their goodbyes, Dad invites me to join him in the living room. I pour him a glass of water and make my way to where he’s engrossed in a newspaper. My dad has this old habit of always reading something; it’s the equivalent of scrolling through social media for older people.

“So,
